People search ballroom dancing in Dallas because they watched a couple waltz, they have a gala coming, or they think a wedding means they have to learn waltz first. You don't need a competition studio. You need a beginner series that matches the music you already like, and a social where the patterns leave the classroom.
Q.01What is ballroom, and where should a beginner start?
Start with the music you already listen to, not a default dance. Ballroom is waltz, foxtrot, tango, Viennese waltz, and quickstep: the elegant partner dances that show up at galas, parties, and Studio 22 socials.
Waltz is the right start if that is the sound you want. If the goal is a wedding, the most useful social dance on a reception floor is West Coast Swing — it fits the modern songs DJs actually play. Tell the front desk what you like and that you are new. They will put you in the right beginner series.
Studio 22 teaches American Smooth (more free-flowing, with room to open out and express) and International Standard (classic closed-embrace technique). Both are in the same beginner series; tell the desk which sound you want. Cody Knight and Maya Apodaca teach 90-minute group classes with two instructors. You learn frame, timing, and patterns you can use at a Ballroom & Latin Social the same month you start.
Cody is a Dallas-raised dancer and KD Actor’s Conservatory alum who teaches American Smooth and Rhythm. Maya grew up in Santa Fe and taught in Albuquerque.
Q.02What other ballroom dances can I learn?
- Waltz — the one people picture. Smooth, traveling, and the right start if that's the music you already like.
- Foxtrot — a walking dance to big band, swing, or ’50s rock and roll.
- Ballroom tango — bigger American movement or a closer International hold. This is not Argentine Tango, which is its own program with milongas.
- Viennese Waltz and Quickstep — later. Viennese is twice as fast as a standard waltz. Quickstep hops and glides once the basics click.
You don't have to pick one forever. The intro offer lets you mix styles or stay with ballroom. For a spotlight first dance, the first-dance guide covers private choreography to your song.
Ballroom classes in Dallas
Waltz, foxtrot, tango, and more. Beginner group classes with no partner needed.
Q.03Do I need a partner for ballroom class?
No. Group classes rotate partners, so coming solo is normal. Rotation is how you learn frame and lead or follow clearly instead of memorizing one person’s habits.
Couples who want to stay together the whole time can look at private lessons or the couples-only Date Night. Group ballroom is the class where you rotate.

Q.04How does the $49 intro work for ballroom?
New students get 3 beginner-friendly 90-minute group classes plus 1 Party Pass for $49 (a $137 value). You can put all three classes on ballroom, or mix in West Coast Swing or another style. Classes expire 30 days from your first class, not from the day you buy. No long-term commitment. Checkout is through Mindbody.
New series start the first week of the month (the 1st through the 7th). After you buy, call (972) 490-0022 and the desk will point you to the right beginner class.
3 beginner classes + a Party Pass for $49
A $137 value. No partner needed. Classes expire 30 days from your first class.
Q.05Where do I actually dance ballroom after class?
Anywhere your feet take you. A wedding, a gala, a party, any night that plays a waltz or foxtrot.
Studio 22 also hosts weekly socials so you can practice what you learned and meet other dancers. Ballroom & Latin nights are on the calendar, and there are socials every weekend across the other styles. Your Party Pass gets you in.

Q.06What should I wear, and where is the studio?
Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole. Sticky rubber soles grip the floor and make turns harder on your knees. Dressy attire isn't required for group classes.
Studio 22 Dallas is at 14902 Preston Road, Suite 400, Dallas, TX 75254, with free shopping-center parking. Call (972) 490-0022 if you need directions.
Start when that's the music you like. First week of the month, $49 intro, then a Ballroom & Latin social before you decide. The live ballroom page has class details and the current calendar.
