If you grew up in Texas, you have watched two-step even if you never named it. A couple moving around the floor in a smooth walk, turning without looking like they are thinking about it. That is the dance people actually use at honky-tonks, weddings, and Saturday nights — and it is learnable in a beginner group class.
This guide covers what two-step is, how it differs from the other country dances at Studio 22 Dallas, whether you need a partner, and how to start with the $49 intro.
Q.01What is two-step?
Two-step is a smooth, progressive partner dance danced in frame. The basic is two short walking steps (“quick-quick”) followed by two longer walking steps (“slow-slow”). The rhythm accents separate the quicks and slows — with the emphasis on the slows.
You travel around the floor in the line of dance. Patterns weave. It looks like walking with a plan, which is why beginners can get something usable in one 90-minute class. It is the Texas social dance you will use most.
Studio 22’s two-step classes are taught by Bobby Pritchard, who has 30 years teaching country and western. Classes are 90 minutes, partners rotate, and you leave with patterns that work on a real country floor.
Q.02What other country dances can I learn?
In Dallas/Fort Worth you will also hear Progressive Double Two-Step, Triple Two, Nightclub Two-Step, and Country Waltz. They are all built for social floors.
- Two-Step — taught by Bobby Pritchard. Smooth, progressive, danced in frame. Quick-quick, slow-slow.
- Progressive Double Two-Step — taught by Jim Weber. A DFW favorite. Six- and eight-count patterns: two shuffle steps with an arching lead, then two walking steps. Jim taught for years as the instructor at Cowboys Red River.
- Nightclub Two-Step — a more relaxed, stationary hold. Think “Lady in Red.” Still one of the most useful slow-song dances.
- Country Western Waltz — graceful diagonal patterns that travel continuously around the floor, different from the ballroom box waltz.
You do not have to pick one forever. The intro offer lets you mix styles or stick with country.
Two-Step classes in Dallas
The Texas social dance you’ll use on a real country floor. No partner required.
Q.03Do I need a partner for two-step class?
No. Group classes rotate partners, so coming solo is normal. Rotation is how you learn to lead or follow clearly instead of memorizing one person’s habits.
If you want to stay with the same person all night, that is a different format: Studio 22’s couples-only Date Night has no rotation. Country two-step group class is the social-floor version — you will dance with several people, which is also what happens at a real honky-tonk.
Never danced? That is the expected starting point. Read how to start dancing in Dallas as a beginner for the first-class checklist (what to wear, when in the month to start, how the Party Pass works).
Q.04How does the $49 intro work for two-step?
New students get 3 beginner-friendly 90-minute group classes plus 1 Party Pass for $49 (a $137 value). You can put all three classes on two-step, or mix in another style. Classes expire 30 days from your first class, not from the day you buy. No long-term commitment. Checkout is through Mindbody.
New series start the first week of the month (the 1st through the 7th). After you buy, call (972) 490-0022 and the desk will point you to the right beginner class. Studio 22 runs more than 120 classes a month.
3 beginner classes + a Party Pass for $49
A $137 value. No partner needed. Classes expire 30 days from your first class.
Q.05Where do I actually dance two-step after class?
On the Studio 22 floor first. The studio hosts Saturday and Sunday country socials, and socials every weekend across its other styles. Your Party Pass gets you into a social so the patterns leave the classroom.
Then you take it out: weddings, country venues, any floor that plays a two-step. The point of Bobby and Jim’s classes is the version you will use in the wild, not a routine you can only do in one room.
Browse upcoming events, or get party reminders by text. If country is your music but you also like a wedding waltz, the first-dance guide covers private lessons for that.
Q.06What should I wear, and where is the studio?
Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole. Sticky rubber soles grip the floor and make turns harder on your knees. Boots with a smooth leather sole work. Dressy attire is not required.
Studio 22 Dallas is at 14902 Preston Road, Suite 400, Dallas, TX 75254, with free shopping-center parking. Call (972) 490-0022 if you need directions.
TakeawaysThe bottom line
Two-step is a walking dance with a clear timing, taught here in 90-minute beginner classes with no partner required. Start in the first week of the month, use the $49 intro, and go to a weekend country social before you decide it is “not for you.” The live two-step page has class details and the current calendar.
