Swing Dance Lessons in Dallas: West Coast Swing for Beginners.

Studio 22 Dallas · Dance styles

Most people who type swing dance lessons in Dallas into a search bar mean one of two things: the bouncy night their parents remember, or the smooth slotted dance they saw on a video set to a song from this year. Those are different dances. Both live at Studio 22 Dallas. This is the one you can dance to almost anything on the radio.

Q.01What is West Coast Swing?

West Coast Swing is a musical, smooth swing style danced to R&B, blues, rock-n-roll, Top 40, country western, and contemporary hip-hop. It developed from Lindy Hop. The movement is playful and fluid, and good dancers improvise so the dance visually mirrors the feel of the song.

It's a slotted dance: you travel forward and back in a narrow lane instead of rotating around a circle. Beginners can master the basic steps quickly. Advanced dancers stay for the tricks, the connection, and the feeling of creating something new with every track.

Wes Neese has taught and competed in West Coast Swing since 1996. Classes are 90 minutes. He starts with connection: how to hear the song and move with a person, not how to memorize counts. The class is non-progressive, so you can join any week of the month.

Q.02How is West Coast Swing different from East Coast Swing?

East Coast is bouncy and circular; West Coast is smoother, slotted, and danced to a wider range of modern music. You can start with either. Many students try both.

East Coast is skipping, rocking, twisting, without the acrobatics of Lindy. It establishes swing tempo for every age and skill level, and it's a genuine beginner’s swing. When you're ready, the same program also has Swingout and Balboa.

If country music is more your night, the studio’s Two-Step classes are a different family. Read the two-step beginner guide for that style.

Q.03Do I need a partner for swing class?

No. Group classes rotate partners, so coming solo is normal. Rotation is how you learn to lead or follow clearly instead of memorizing one person’s habits.

If you want to stay with the same person the whole night, Studio 22’s couples-only Date Night has no rotation. December’s Date Night is Jitterbug / Lindy Hop on Friday, December 11. Weekly West Coast Swing class is the one where you rotate.

Q.04How does the $49 intro work for West Coast Swing?

New students get 3 beginner-friendly 90-minute group classes plus 1 Party Pass for $49 (a $137 value). You can put all three classes on West Coast Swing, or mix in East Coast or another style. Classes expire 30 days from your first class, not from the day you buy. No long-term commitment. Checkout is through Mindbody.

West Coast Swing is a non-progressive class. You can join any week of the month; you don't wait for the first week the way some other series do. After you buy, call (972) 490-0022 and the desk will point you to the right room.

Q.05Where do I actually dance West Coast Swing after class?

Visit the studio first. Wes’s program has Sunday socials plus Saturday parties, so you can use what you learned that same week. Your Party Pass gets you in. The studio also hosts socials every weekend across the other styles.

It's also the most useful social dance at a wedding. Reception playlists are mostly modern songs, and West Coast Swing is built for that music. The spotlight first dance can still be custom choreography in private lessons — see the wedding lesson guide.

Browse upcoming events, or get party reminders by text.

Q.06What should I wear, and where is the studio?

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole. Sticky rubber soles grip the floor and make the slot harder to dance. Dressy attire isn't required.

Studio 22 Dallas is at 14902 Preston Road, Suite 400, Dallas, TX 75254, with free shopping-center parking. Call (972) 490-0022 if you need directions.

Use the $49 intro, join any week, and go to a Saturday party or a Sunday social that same week. That's where West Coast Swing stops being a class and starts being a night out. The live West Coast Swing page has class details and the current calendar.
